MOUNT AIRY, NC – Renfro Corporation along with other area businesses sponsored Surry County and Mount Airy City Middle School’s new First® Lego® League (FLL) program to help promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Sponsors provided financial support and mentoring. Kevin Hoffman and Tom McCluskey from Renfro’s Industrial Engineering Department volunteered as mentors and sponsored teams from Gentry Middle School.
In the competition, 14 teams of up to 10 students competed using Lego® based robots to complete themed missions as well as presented solutions to real world problems. This year’s theme was Nature’s Fury. Teams chose problems that people face in preparing, surviving or recovering from natural disasters. They researched and presented possible solutions to solve their problems. Teams also designed and programmed robots to complete as many tasks and earn as many points possible in the robot competition. Work towards the competition began early in the school year and ended with teams competing to be awarded Core Values Champion, Project Champion, Robot Design Champion, Robot Run High Score Champion, Judges Award, or the Overall Champion. Team Tornadoes which Tom McCluskey mentored won 1st place as Project Champion and Team Tsunami Survivors which Kevin Hoffman mentored won 1st place in the Robot Game category.
The FLL’s mission is “to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.” To learn more about FLL visit http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/fll.
