The Socks for Heroes organization was started by the parents of LCPL Donald J. Hogan, killed in Afghanistan in August 2009. Mr. and Mrs. Hogan spent a lot of time following their son’s death with soldiers. Speaking to over 100 field Marines, when asked what they needed most, the Marines said, “Send us socks”. They have no laundry facilities and have to hand wash their socks in rivers and ponds, leaving them to air dry. The socks aren’t always dry when they have to put them back on and sometimes contain sand and dirt. This organization has supplied over 390,000 pairs of socks since May 2011.
Socks for Heroes is currently supplying 2 Marine Infantry Battalions (1,000 soldiers per battalion) plus support units. Multiply that number by a pair of socks every 3 days and that’s 10,000 pairs a month!
Renfro has supported Socks for Heroes for the last four years and recently sent 3,000 pairs of brown “Fresh and Dry Comfort” socks to them for distribution.
